The Hill of Crosses, near Šiauliai in northern Lithuania, stands as a powerful symbol of resistance against Soviet oppression. During the Soviet occupation, religious and cultural expressions were heavily restricted, as authorities sought to suppress national identity and faith. The Hill became a focal point for this suppression. Despite the regime's attempts to erase it by bulldozing the crosses at night, the Lithuanian people responded with determination. Every day, new crosses were erected, defying the authorities and reaffirming their cultural identity. This cycle of destruction and renewal transformed the Hill into a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of the Lithuanian people, making it a beacon of hope and a cherished pilgrimage site that continues to inspire visitors worldwide.
